Pain now coming back sooner than past blocks

Post by branbud »

I have had a pudendal block that worked for about 6 months. Then I had a block that lasted for a couple years! ( I would still get flare ups off and on after a bowel movement sometimes) But the last two blocks only lasted for up to two months. How can this be? I am only allowed 3 blocks a year.

Hi Branbud,

Welcome to the forum. Were all your blocks done by the same doctor? Does your doctor include a steroid? I don't know why they would become less effective over time. Hopefully others on here might have some ideas.

Sincerely,
Stephanies
PN started 2004 from fall. Surgery with Filler Nov. 2006, Dr. Campbell April 2007. Pain decreased by 85% in 2008 (rectal and sitting pain resolved completely), pain returned in 12/13. Pain reduced significantly beginning around 11/23.

Did your doctor have any ideas on why the blocks aren't lasting as long now? I don't really have any ideas other than what Stephanie said unless maybe your nerve is just becoming more sensitive.

PNE since 2002. Started from weightlifting. PNE surgery from Dr. Bautrant, Oct 2004. Pain now is usually a 0 and I can sit for hours on certain chairs. No longer take medication for PNE. Can work full time and do "The Firm" exercise program. 99% cured from PGAD. PNE surgery was right for me but it might not be for you. Do your research.

I had been a member of this board but I have not been here for a year or so. I had to sign in with a new login as the admin could not find my email. I was Chex before I think. I have my blocks done in Toronto with Dr. Peng every time. When they call me back in I will have to get more information. Thanks for your replies.

Branbud, Dr. Kay with St.Josephs, Phoenix, Hibner is doing the cryo blocks. I leave in a couple of weeks and I pray it will help. Emory has had success with theirs. I still have the "egg" I developed (throbs) when I woke up after spinal surgery. The egg hurt more than the spinal surgery. Hospital stirrups did a number on me. At least some doctors know what PNE is. Are you any better? I do not think a lot of physical activity helps this condition. Just my private opinion. Dr. Antolak would have trained PNE doctors in MN I would think. Carlie

My interventional radiologist relays that some steroids are longer lasting than others and there are some new ones available. Also heard that sometimes the effect diminishes over time of injections.
Take care,

Cyclist till perineal pain onset R side (Apr'08). Dx with PN (Aug'09). Lyrica gave 30% pain reduction. Potter MRI (Oct'10) validated at surgery with Dr Hibner (Nov'10) - found nerve attached to scarred STL. Now sitting 10 hrs/day vs 1 hr/day pre-op. Occasional MRI-guided steroid injections by Dr. Jan Fritz at Johns Hopkins. Surgery video = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FDwana6SQU

Deep neuropathic burning pain flares have been gone since surgery...Grateful to Dr Hibner.

Can someone please tell me what Cryo is? Is this similar to an ablation I have not heard of this.

Thanks,

Royce
