If it's resected when it doesn't need to be -- I guess you could needlessly lose some sensation in that area. The sensation may or may not return. Another possibility might be the development of an neuroma. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20973154

Your surgeon should be answering all of these questions before you have surgery so that you are going into it well-informed, knowing what to expect. If they aren't answering your questions, I think that is a problem.
