I'm massaging the muscles around the rectum area, yes it's not pleasant, you have to put your fingers in your rectum but I haven't been putting them in deep. It has released a lot of tension in the rectum and perineum areas.

This all kind of makes sense now, when I was forcing myself to touch my toes I felt a rectal burning sensation the next day, I must have overstretched and damanged the muscles in that area and because of that they became very tight, now massaging them is releasing the tightness.

glad to hear the massages are helping you

I am interested in what you are doing cause I have a lot of tightness in the rectum causing bad constipation and I also have severe penile numbness which you have helped yourself with through the massages..so...

from the inside, you are massaging the sphincter muscles where the rectum opens up?

also, was constipation one of your symptoms?

thanks for the info

take care

Hi, yes it's the muscles around the sphincter and just inside, after doing the massage these muscles were quite sore for a day or two, in fact they are still quite sore, so I might give it a rest for a day. Just put some baby oil in that area and on your fingers and press quite hard, if it hurts then that means there is some muscular tension. The fact that I can sit at the computer now and type this message with only a little discomfort shows how much of an improvement I've had. Before last thursday everytime I urinated or went to the toilet I would feel a sharp type of pain in my perineum and rectum, this has now gone, I can even tense up that area and do a kegal with no pain.
I still have some tension in my perineum area and it kind of gives me this weird aroused feeling throughout the day, I can whack one out and still have the urge to do another one an hour later whereas before I could do a max of two a day on a good day, I'm trying to massage that tension away but it's a bit more difficult. I don't know whether my condition is definitely PNE, but after doing some research I read that the treatment for it involves massaging the area and for me it has helped.

Whether I'm ready to spend 8 hours on my chair is another thing though, I'm worried my symptoms will return as soon as I go back to work, but I've still got another week off to perform massages. For the past three months I've felt hopeless, it's really ruined my life, I haven't been to the cinema, haven't sat in front of the tv. I would come back from work, do the housework then sit in a sitz bath for some relief and then finally just lie in bed before going to sleep. This has given me hope.

I wouldn't really say I had a lot of constipation as I'm always drinking lots of water. Try it.

I'm going going to book a sports massage this week for my back, glutes and hamstring, that may reduce the tension in the perineum area further.

Also different chairs give me different feelings, firmer seats like my computer chair and car seats are far better than sofas with large soft cushions.

drink tons of water..still have constipation problems though..spasms at the openning

firmer chair better for me too as long as it is not tooooo firm, like a bench

I think the ones that are cushioned a lot, tend to push up into the perineum area, which is exactly what we are trying to avoid

take care, rob

Yes you're exactly right! The softer chairs really dig in to your crotch, luckily the one at work is not like that, it's kind of a net type of material.

So I've been back to work for a week now. Things aren't great, I still get rectal pain and a decreased libido, but things are better than before my 2 week break. I make sure I get up from my desk every hour or so and also try to make my pelvic floor as relaxed as possible when sitting.

There is one exercise that I think will help me a lot. The squat position, I've been doing it for the past 4 days. Unfortunately i'm very inflexible and have a dodgy right knee and hip, so getting into this position is very difficult. I have to really warm up and stretch beforehand. And my lowerback is sore afterwards. But I'm hoping it will get better daily.

I notice after I do a few squat positions, like being in the position for 30 seconds or so, blood flow in the perineum region is so much better. My urine flow is much faster and my penis is harder.
Sorry if this sounds rude but I wake up with morning erections everyday now, for the past three months this would never happen.

The source of my pain i believe is a tight rectum, that is why the massage helped first and now why the squat position is helping, it's stretching those muscles.

If I can get more flexible, then I can start doing the squat stretch at work as well, which will help me even more.

Reckless,

I'm glad that squatting seems to be working for you. It is actually not supposed to be done by PNers. Just make sure not to lean over from your waist while squatting. This position will pull on your sacrum (which is where the PN originates) and further irritate the nerve. Maybe the ache in your "lower back" while squatting is telling you something? I can't even lean over to unload the dishwasher without feeling the pull/ache in my sacrum, which then leads to pain in my perineum. Luckily I have teenagers to do the job!
Athlete until pain started in 2001. Diagnosed with PN in Nov. 2010. Probable cause: 3 difficult labors, 5 pelvic surgeries for endometriosis, and undiagnosed hip injuries. 60% better after 3 rounds of shockwave therapy in Cornwall, Ontario (Dec - Feb/12). 99% better after bilateral hip scopes for FAI and labral tears (April and July/12).
