Hi Merrie,
My hip pain was so bad that I was limping and having sharp shooting pains in my right leg. I could only sit by leaning over on my left side. The pain went from mild to excruciating over the course of a year. Surgery cured all these problems. The best resurfacing doctors often have a signifigant wait time. How does Dr. Jordan figure that you will be able to walk for the rest of your life with no cartilage in your hip without surgery at some point ? I just don't get that.

Hi Lernica and others with torn Labrums, I found this article and website regarding surgery for it and other info. Not sure if will helps but it looks as if there is a specific outpatient surgery for this that may help.

Dr Jordans view is that I should wait until I cannot walk and that is when I should do a hip replacement. He is highly concerned about rsd and he said a hip lasts 15 years and I am 41. I also have other medical issues (autoimmune stuff) he is concerned about. He feels the hip is not the cause of the pne pain. He instead wants me to have synvic injected into the hip which is not covered by insurance and I cannot afford. My pt was going to be speaking with him today to discuss with him further. I have an appt with a hip surgeon in nov (had to move it back due to other issues i am dealing with). I am also going to plan to contact one of the hip resurfacing drs - but so far the orthapedist I saw - dr carlos guanche at scoi -and dr Jordan dont think that is an option for me. Too many drs to see - esp when i have to work to support my family - it's very overwhelming. I don't know what to do. I am terrified of making things worse by having surgery especially when I have a young child with special needs I need to care for.

The injections can only buy you some time if any. I went to an orthopedic surgeon in my network and he told me that hip resurfacing was not an option for me and that no one was doing it anyway. Thanks to the internet (surfacehippy.com) I knew that what he was really saying was that HE wasn't doing it and that what he was telling me wasn't true. I sent my x-rays to four of the resurfacing doctors and they all told me that resurfacing would be no problem for me. By the time I switched to Healthnet during open enrollment at the end of 2009 ( to get to Dr. Vail at UCSF) and waited for my surgery date ( 6 mos. altogether), I could barely walk. ONLY the surgeon who is doing the resurfacing can accurately evaluate your candidacy for this procedure. This surgery is more difficult than a replacement but at your age this is a critical issue. I am 61 and I was worried about it. Revising a resurfacing in 15 years is easy. Revising a replacement is more challenging. Resurfacing is like PN. You need to go to someone who specializes in this area. Don't waste your time listening to anyone else. Once the cartilage is gone, things can go downhill pretty fast. Wishing you all the best.
