hi,
an acquaintance of mine mentioned she is having prolapse repair and a partial robotic hysterectomy (where they remove the uterus not the cervix or ovaries)

knowing prolapse can cause PN, I am glad for that repair.
but knowing hysterectomies can cause PN pain, I am worried for her.

does anybody know which hysterectomy types are most prone to PN pain. I remember I think that abdominal ones are safer and I assume that since hers is less invasive there is less risk.

has anyone on these forums had a partial robotic hysterectomy and still gotten pn?

I tried to warn her somewhat, but I am not super bold at giving people bad news...

I would think that nicking the pudendal nerve during a hysterectomy is a very unlikely and unfortunate event, likely due to an incompetent surgeon or a very unusual and/or complicated case. I wouldn't worry too much about your friend, assuming she has a competent and experienced gynaecologic surgeon. She will be having a laparoscopy, no?

Unfortunately I think the robotic surgery being called "less invasive" may only be a marketing slogan. Even with a smaller incision, PN pain can result from a hysterectomy.

If the incision is too long, the retractors placed in the wrong place or the cuff tacked directly to the nerve it can happen. Mine was an abdominal hysterectomy with a bikini cut even though I told him I wanted the "old fashioned" vertical cut. I hadn't worn a bikini since 1978!

My mom just had a Robotic Assisted Hysterectomy on Tuesday. I worry for her nerve every day.

Don't worry about your mom! It is a very rare complication!! Put your mind at rest. It's not like you don't already have enough on your plate!

Make sure her physician is trained highly in robotic hysterectomies. Dr. Hibner does them all the time. Probably more so than PNE.

And yet if you see the link in my post above, you'll note that PN pain has even resulted from one of his robotic hysterectomies. We need to face that no one can explain why this surgery can cause this pain, and that no surgical approach whatsoever can be said to be free of this complication.

Celeste, I read the link regarding the robotic LAVH started by MsRivers. She indicates that her PN started after this procedure but she does not mention the dr.'s name. In your comment it sounds to me like Dr. Hibner did her surgery but I do not see that in this link. Is the link incorrect, did I misunderstand your statement?

This is not an attempt to prop up one Dr. or another just an attempt to make sure the information that is posted is accurate.

I've spoken with her extensively, and yes Dr. Hibner did do her hysterectomy robotically and the pain came on afterwards. I think we just all need to understand that hysterectomy is a risk for PN pain, and it clearly has nothing to do with small of a "less invasive" incision is made.
