I've been meaning to post about this for a little while, high time I actually shared it, I think.

For the last six months or so, I've had some problems with hyperarousal symptoms. I know I am not alone in this - it is one of the most distressing aspects of PN, in my opinion. Not only is it embarrassing, it is also hard to describe, and I have found that it can be very unpleasant indeed.

I am pretty sure that tramadol suppresses it. I have only ever had this symptom when I've not been taking tramadol. It first happened when I was off tramadol for three weeks, and it has happened again since then when I was late taking my tablet. Taking tramadol makes it go away, it is as simple as that.

I wanted to share this in case it is of help to others with the same problem.

Luckily I've only run into the hyperarousal for a couple of day stretch. It really kind of freaked me out! Alas, Tramadol does not seem to help any of my symptoms. I even tried taking 100mg one night and woke up feeling hungover the next day. I seem to have an odd reaction to most meds. Nortriptyline keeps me awake, tramadol feel nothing ( I can take it in the middle of the work day and keep going, remaining in pain ), gabapentin just made me lose my mind or at least my memory . So hoping I get some answers soon.

That must be really difficult for you. I do know what you mean about the gabapentin! I decided I would rather keep the pain and keep the brain, if you know what I mean

It is a seriously weird symptom though isn't it, very very freaky feeling. Well if you do run into it again - I hope you don't - then maybe give the tramadol a try. I took 100mg slow release (the 12 hour ones) and that did it for me.

Hmmmmm, I'll have to ask my doc for the slow release one. Thank you for the suggestion.

Mind you, not saying that the ordinary sort wouldn't have the same effect, because I don't know either way, I haven't tried it. It is just that I am taking the slow release stuff.

Had another demonstration of this over the weekend. We've been away for a few days, and what with change of routine I forgot to take the tramadol which I usually have at 9pm - woke up around midnight in considerable discomfort with this symptom, plus pain. Realised I had forgotten to take tramadol. Half an hour for the stuff to kick in, the HA subsided.
