Overly Active Intestines

One of my worst symptoms is overly active intestines-medical name is boborygmus. There doesn't seem to be any correlation to what I eat. I wonder if it is a side effect of Lyrica. It is just awful. I lie in bed and all I hear is gurgle gurgle. Seems to happen only when I am lying down. Is this a symptom of nerve damage???? My neuro is hopeless.... TIA

Hi Fluffers Mom,
This does not sound like anything to do with a neurological condition. It occurs normally from hunger or from eating a food that has caused gas to form in the intestines. Could be from a medication also, but the only way to find out if it from the Lyrica would be to decrease the dose and wean off, if you believe this is the cause. However, if the Lyrica is helping you with pain, it would make more sense to try a remedy for gas, like simethicone. Also, if you are taking any of the products like benefiber or generics containing psyllium fiber or wheat fiber for constipation, or to prevent it, these can be gas producers.

I don't know exactly what's going on in your case but I remember during the worst of PNE I had similar issues and a lot of problems with constipation. When I started taking magnesium citrate to keep things cleared out the problem went away. You can have diarrhea part of the time and still be constipated because what happens is the bowel gets backed up and then liquid stool leaks out around the hard backed up stool. Might be something to consider.

It turns out that this is a side effect of Lyrica: bloating and gas are listed as side effects. I guess I just have a very severe reaction....
