If you suspect you have PN or a problem with your prudendal nerve,is it best to try a physical therapist to help with your symptoms before going to a pelvic dr./specialist to get a deffinate diagnosis?

Also, when you are looking for a dr.who treats pelvic issues and you know they treat PN issues with botox, is that a common treatment and if so does it help? Does botox ever make pelvic pain worse??

Hi Lindsey,
We often suggest PT first because they can help with diagnosis ( they said PNE and although that it was not official because they are not doctors, they were right). Also if you just have muscular issues they can help with that and some other things. Not sure about botox.

Lindsey, it might depend on who you can get an appointment with first. If there is a long waiting time you might want to go ahead and schedule both a PT and a physician appointment especially if you are in a lot of pain. If your insurance requires a physician referral to PT then you would have to see the physician first.

Any invasive procedure can make the pain worse, but doing nothing can also make the pain worse. It's less invasive to try physical therapy than to try Botox first. Botox is not an uncommon treatment for pelvic floor tension. Some people get relief from Botox, others don't. Unfortunately with pelvic pain, you don't always know what will work until you try it.

Violate, I am in pain and Ive only had problems for 4 months. Started with badder, then my labia, and now my feet and legs. Whatever is wrong with me has progressed quickly. I started Physio therapy today and found out about a lot of tight muscles. You said if its hurtint you should also be seeing a physician. Your regular doctor? Should i try to find a uro/gyno?

I was just thinking that if you are in a lot of pain you might need some medication to control the pain. Probably your GP would be the person to start with for pain medication but it might depend on your GP and how well they know you. My urogyn was not comfortable prescribing pain medications.
