Reemergence of pain after two year remission

Post by Jimmy »

Hello Everyone,

It has been some time since I have been on the PNE message boards. I was completely pain free for almost two years when my rectal pain reemerged this past August. I had severe constipation this past August and the pain came back and has been increasing in intensity. For almost the past two years, I have been able to sit painless for hours on end without taking any medication or using a special cushion. However, now that the burning pain is back, I am again have burning rectal pain and unable to sit without the use of a special cushion. Though I am very fortunate to have had complete pain relief for two years it is very frustrating to be back in constant pain. It has been four months since the pain has come back and it appears not to be diminishing. I am at a complete loss as to how to proceed or what to expect in terms of my prognoses.

The precursor to my initial PNE pain was severe constipation in fall 2006. I had the TG surgery in Houston, Texas in April 2008. I didn’t notice any improvement or reduction in pain until August 2009. From August 2009 – August 2011 I was very much pain free – able to participate and enjoy the normal functions of life. I have been back in pain for the last four months and considering my two year pain remission I am at a loss as to what options I should investigate.

Your thoughts are welcomed.

You might try some PT to see if that can do anything for you. I hope you will try to get some pain management going to be more comfortable while you look for long term answers. Do you have someone local to try for that? I do know that the Houston team will help you with pain management post op. Contact Dr. Renney if you would want to try a nerve block (if those helped you in the past) or if you would like to see if Dr. Popeney can prescribe you some medications. FYI, Dr. Renney uses a different secure messaging provider since you were going through the program, so you would have to start over with an account on the new one. I posted a link to the directions in the Houston section here.

I'm so sorry you've had a relapse but I've heard of it happening to cured people and it's been able to be resolved with patience, pain management, and sometimes PT. I think it bodes very well for you that you have experienced relief.

Good luck with whatever is next for you.
PNE as a result of childbirth, 2002. Treatment by the Houston team, with neurosurgery by Dr. Ansell in 2004. My left side ST and SS ligaments were found to be grown together, encasing the pudendal nerve.

I am cured. I hope you will be, too.

There are no medical answers on the forum. Your only hope is to go to a doctor. I was very happy with the Houston team, which has treated the most PNE patients (well over 400), more than any other US provider.

Hi Jimmy, sorry to see you back here. I know it's hard to avoid constipation but it's so important. Check out these suggestions for avoiding constipation. http://pudendalhope.org/node/32
PNE since 2002. Started from weightlifting. PNE surgery from Dr. Bautrant, Oct 2004. Pain now is usually a 0 and I can sit for hours on certain chairs. No longer take medication for PNE. Can work full time and do "The Firm" exercise program. 99% cured from PGAD. PNE surgery was right for me but it might not be for you. Do your research.
