New to forum - looking for support

Post by Rebecca40 »

Hi I'm Rebecca 15 weeks ago I had a posterior and anterior pelvic floor repair , I had sever pain when waking from the op, put it down to the fact it is a painful operation , the recovery was long an slow and I had all these strange sensations , again put it down to the op, 6 days ago the pain got so bad I went to hospital, the throbbing , pulling and burning pain is intense and unrelenting , it's on the right and just beside my rectum , I'm being sent home from hospital , they say its nerve pain and have given me all kinds of horrible drugs , they do help the pain but not entirely , I am convinced that my pudendal nerve has been compressed by something due to the surgery maybe a stitch or something , an MRI has shown no other cause for this awful pain , what I want to ask is has anyone else had the pain so severely ? It also comes with huge rushes of adrenalin , is this common ? Any help or advice great fully received , the surgeon who did my op says he has no idea why I'm in pain and in twenty years of surgery this has never happened . I do not know what to do or where to go from here and feeling really low

Hello Rebecca,

I'm really sorry to hear about your complications after surgery. Answers to your questions are that yes, PN pain can be severe and it's not uncommon to seek help in the ER only to be told there is nothing they can do. Some people have autonomic nervous system involvement. What are your symptoms when you have the adrenaline rush?

Not sure where you live but maybe one idea would be to see if you can find a pelvic floor physical therapist in your area who is specifically trained in the treatment of pudendal neuralgia to see if they can help you with a possible diagnosis and treatment. In the meantime, maybe some gel ice packs or a heating pad (or alternating) would help for temporary pain relief.

PNE since 2002. Started from weightlifting. PNE surgery from Dr. Bautrant, Oct 2004. Pain now is usually a 0 and I can sit for hours on certain chairs. No longer take medication for PNE. Can work full time and do "The Firm" exercise program. 99% cured from PGAD. PNE surgery was right for me but it might not be for you. Do your research.

Thanks for your reply violet

The adrenaline rushes are so hard to define but it radiates throughout my body , well up into my chest , there is also a feeling of vibration that also comes up into my chest at times, or it feels like it does .

A few days on pre gabalin has calmed it somewhat but I'm still having to take diclofenac, paracetamol , tramadol and oramorph to be almost pain free.

I live in Bristol - uk and this site has shown me there is a doctor in Bristol called mr greenslade that can treat this type of pain , I will make an appointment with him.

The consultant that did my op thinks that this is a rare reaction to internal sutures and that I should hang on for a couple of months and it may be ok. I am still going to see Mr Greenslade if I can and get his opinion.

I feel calmer today and able to plan a way forward whereas earlier this week I was on complete meltdown , a bit mad due the pain and in complete panic that I will be like this forever

Rebecca,

I think since the meds are relieving your symptoms, you are smart to go ahead and take them even if they don't take all of the symptoms away. As long as the side effects aren't severe, it's better than allowing your brain to get into a cycle of pain, right?

Hope you can get an appointment with Dr. Greenslade without too long of a wait.

Best,

Violet
